I listened to this as an audio book and I remember the experience was very unsatisfactory. Having since read Divisadero and the The Cat's Table, I know now that you have to read and reread sections of Ondaatje's writing to really appreciate it. And audio books are so coloured by the voice and intonation of the reader.

I loved this so much. Reminded me of the careful and brutal poetics of Boochani and the beauty within the terror of Welcome to Chechnya (both harrowing but worth the time)

I did feel very drawn in by the author’s beautiful writing, and I didn’t know anything about the civil war in Sri Lanka so was interested to learn about it. But the storyline got a little lost for me in the middle, and was barely recovered at the end. Maybe I just don’t really get poetic writing?
