A nice surprise. I really enjoyed this story. It had a cool witchy vibe with enough mystery to keep things intriguing. The main character was likable despite a few questionable choices. The story itself did feel a bit YA-ish, like a mix of Harry Potter and Hunger Games, until things got a little seggsy toward the end. The MMC did seem a little stalkerish (FMC even calls him out on it) and he walked a fine line of questionable behavior, but he was just enough dark and brooding, and secretly lovesick. It worked for me, even if he didn’t have a lot of other character depth. And that ending?!? I really thought it was going to work out. Excited to see how things get fixed (hopefully?) in the next one.
The few things I didn’t like: the names of some of these characters are borderline silly. Like almost worse than HP…almost. Also, icicle play in the bedroom? Hard pass.

A pleasant surprise. Wasn't feeling these or any titles I had checked out with KU, chose these because it was a short series I could cross off. Quite a good story. The magic system was super cool, with the receivings or trances where witches got their new spells, always accompanied by a magical tattoo of sorts.

Three best friends, lore, and love, and lore, and 3-way betrayal. The world was also very cool - a central island amidst several surrounding islands, connected only by bridges and the occasional magic door. Each island is a vastly different ecosystem. Small secrets or mysteries that become big and grand reveals, lynchpins of the story. Very much enjoyed the relationships, the trials, the environment, and overall conclusion.
