I keep bouncing between 2 and 3 stars. I listened to it constantly, so I must've liked it, but it was insanely strange. I just felt like it couldn't pick a time period it believed it was taking place in, the main characters were absurdly dumb despite being so smart, and the writing bounced between great and "wait... did a 17 year old write this?"

But yea, definitely going to finish the series so... there's that.

The plot is pretty good; I found myself much more invested in the trials than the love affair. The banter between Raven and Grey is so natural (I've finished book 1&2, so I know how this turns out), I wish they would've had more of a spark. Miranda's writing style and grammatical errors leave a lot to be desired, but this book didn't have nearly as many errors as book #2.

I liked this book in theory. There are just some issues I’m hoping are worked out for book 2. The main issue being a hardcore case of purple prose. The first 50% of the book is soooooo overwritten, I had to push myself to finish. There are also some scenes that felt way too similar to be a coincidence (a soup meal at a secluded cabin on the side of a mountain????

This was insanely good and just what I needed to pull me out of a reading slump!

Idea 4/5
Execution 2/5

I wanted to love this book but it was soooo slow! I stuck with it hoping it would get better and thankfully it did but not until about 90% through.

This was engrossing. High fantasy witch trials with lots of magic, plus brooding romance. I appreciated the queer rep with her best friend and their supportive friendship.
