A moving and well written memoir - I finished it in tears! An incredible story and a touching exploration of the mother and daughter relationship, however flawed it was. A great insight into the acting industry and what it meant to be a woman in it.
She has had quite an emotion filled and tough life. It doesn't resemble the characters she played on TV or in her movies. She is incredibly open about the problems she has lived through, the relationships which have left scars, and the perseverance which enabled her to achieve the great heights and awards she earned throughout her career. This is not a fun book. She delves at length into sexual and emotional abuse she experienced over the years as well as some personal tragedies. It is emotional, heartbreaking, and difficult to read at times because of the events, not because of the writing. She writes well. I listened to this as an audiobook, and she narrates her own book. That's often not a good thing, and it wasn't in this case either. I recommend reading it over listening to it. Despite her outstanding talent as an actress, she reads less well than you would expect, and her voice often seems a bit whiny. I recommend the book, especially to those who can remember her as Gidget, and her other rolls through the years.
This is not a gossipy little book. It's emotionally raw and uncomfortable much of the time. Field confronts her childhood traumas and their aftermath in her adult life with honesty and strength. I saw a side of her I never knew existed.

I have loved Sally Field for most of my life, and have long considered her to be one of my favorite actors. This glimpse into her life was raw, poignant, and beautifully human. I highly recommend the audiobook, read by Field, where her emotion and passion are on full display.

Who doesn’t love Sally Field?! This books talks about her upbringing, life as an actress and how women were treated in the industry back then, her success on screen, and her rise to fame. While Sally Field might portrait happy women in her work, she had a difficult upbringing. She is a strong woman, who despite the childhood trauma an anxiety she had, she powered through to be a successful woman, daughter, and mother.
Now and again I see a memoir, or a biography that catches my attention. Sally Field caught my attention, just like Gidget and The Flying Nun caught my attention when I was much younger. This was a raw and honest memoir. Saddened by the neglect and abuse she faced, and some of the strained relationships she had with leading men, I did read this with interest that she is who she is today through all of those experiences. She put the demons in her past to good use through acting, and it was also clear that she is still grappling to find peace within herself. Perhaps that's why this memoir resonated with me. It can't always be a happy ending; life is what it is, and you might not have the answer after years of writing, but you are a step closer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir by Sally Field. It primarily focuses on her early life and career then speeds through current time. If you are looking for Hollywood gossip, then this isn’t the book you are looking for. It is a story about the difficulty and immense love from motherhood- her own relationship with her mother and her relationship with her sons.
“All of them with wounds that wouldn’t heal because no one acknowledged they were bleeding, and yet each of them needing the other to be near. And that—I realize—is how this story fits into my life. These generations of women, weaving a pattern into a lifelong garment, unconsciously handed down from mother to daughter to granddaughter to me.”
A friend of mine recommended this book to me. I knew, almost from the first chapter, that this memoir was not about someone I cared about. I don’t read many celebrity memoirs. The ones I have read are by funny people and they read their own stories. Given what happened to Field, I guess I have to be grateful that I didn’t listen to this story. It would have been even more difficult to hear Field tell this tale of broken promises, abuse and other trauma.
Although I knew I didn’t want to continue reading, I was concerned that my friend would be expecting me to “report back”. I should have known that her suggestion was only that, not an expectation. She hasn’t brought it up since.
I am sure this book has wide appeal. Field does do an excellent job of telling her tale. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I admire Ms Field for sharing painful experiences in her life so honestly. It was tough to read about them. I enjoyed the insight into her acting career, the process of choosing a role, the auditioning process. But overall this didn't grab me like some memoirs do; even after all the sharing I felt I didn't know her.
