I thought this was an amazing read. This is the first bio I have read that made me cry from joy and empathy for a very long time. She is an extraordinary woman.
Not gonna lie, it felt like a ghost writer was at work here, and I mean that in the best way, but even if it was just a strong editor and a preternaturally talented celebrity, this book blows every other recent memoir I've read out of the water. That's even after filtering for Sally Field's extreme likeability. The structure and point of view are very strong, and the content of Ms. Field's life is amazing. I especially enjoyed reading about the work of acting, including her years working with The Actor's Studio. But the emotional journey of the book is the story arc, and it is fine, wise, and heartfelt (although lots of trigger warnings there, none of it seems included for sensationalism.) Bonus points for all the photos. I think every memoir or biography deserves lots of pictures so we can see who we're reading about.
Loved her honesty, her writing style, and how she ties her stories to bigger themes in life. I loved every minute of this!

Much more vulnerable than I expected. The style - watching her examine key situations and people in real time, determining their impact - was fascinating. Picked up Norma Rae (haven’t seen that OR Smokey and the Bandit, I know) from the library to watch this weekend.
D'what I loved this and I was totally not expecting to. Field does a great job observing and analyzing her own life, and her writing ability is engaging, warm, funny, and tender.
This memoir by Sally Field starts off slow, but after a few chapters in I enjoyed hearing about Sally's personal life and challenges and the rise of her Hollywood career. Almost immediately into the book, Sally divulges how she was sexually abused by her stepfather when she was a child and ongoing throughout her adolescence. She also has a story about a director she worked with, a much older married man who expected her to go along with his sexual advances, and she went along with it, being 23 years old and not wanting to disrupt the movie she was working on and her budding career. Gee, sure would be nice to read a memoir by a woman who didn't have a story like these to tell. This kind of stuff is much more prevalent that most of us would like to think. Sally ends the book with her hard-fought battle to win the role of Mary Lincoln in Team of Rivals. It was a good memoir.
Note: I listened to this on Audible with Sally reading it herself.

Beautifully read by Sally Field and so emotional, raw, honest, and enlightening. A look into the deepest darkest corners of her soul, and life choices in love, family life, and career. I am meeting her Saturday and really looking forward to it especially after she exposed her soul to us all in this book. A real gem.
