Hard to believe a lot of the story or have empathy for the characters. I'd rather read about the art on its own I guess.

The Magnolia Palace takes place between two points in time. 1919, Lillian Carter is a nude model for artists and recently lost her mother at the age of 21. She now has to figure how to go about life by herself while grieving her mother. However a scandal breaks out and she has to flee.

The second setting is in 1966, where we follow a young model named Veronica who came to America for a modeling gig only to find clues of what happened in 1919.

Between the two settings, I found the story very enjoyable and the mystery a joy to read. It's a very slow start but the characters make it worth it. They all felt very human.

I will say, I predicted the twist pretty early on but I wouldn't say it was totally predictable. If you read closely the clues will come together and will give you a satisfying finish to this tale.

I enjoyed the premise of this book. The accidental encounter between Ms. Frick and our protagonist was well done and felt like a clever, exciting start. However, the book dragged on in the middle and I found that the 60s timeline didn't mesh well at all. Furthermore, Davis' writing is weak, to say the least.

I enjoyed this book very thoroughly! I enjoyed the timeline crossover and mysterious elements. The characterization and attention to detail kept me wrapped in.

Interesting subject matter (the Frick Museum and the New York City art scene in the early 1900s) but I didn’t love the writing. A lot of the characters’ thoughts felt over explained. It was still entertaining and I liked the dual timelines.
