A revenge story is already a hard sell for me, but seeing as this is the classic revenge story, I had to try. But nope.
I just can't get myself to care about a revenge plan that takes literal years upon years to come to fruition.
The whole wink-wink-nudge-nudge routine got old real quick. As reader you know who Dante is, but the other characters obviously do not. This leads to constant situations where the other characters don't know that the Count is actually playing them when he is being nice, but the reader does. This is fun for a couple of times, but for the rest of the book...
Best part was the beginning 250 pages, with his betrayal, imprisonment, escape.

Very engaging. A bit too long but def a reason this is a classic

I may or may not come back here to make the more comprehensive review this work deserves from me, but to be brief, this was a 1200-page personal challenge that I surprisingly thoroughly enjoyed.

I admittedly went into it expecting my reading experience to be hampered by its length, but I barely felt it. Instead, I found many parts of it (if not all) thought-provoking and a good chunk of the b-plots (and there were many) captivating.

This book has without a doubt made itself a favorite of mine.

“There is neither happiness nor misfortune in this world, there is merely the comparison between one state and another, nothing more.”

By far the longest book I’ve ever read. The translation by Robin Buss is wonderful. Throughout 1200 pages I never once found it hard to keep turning pages, an epic saga with every kind of plot twist you can imagine. By the end I had become so familiar with the protagonist Edmundo that turning the last page was like saying good to and old friend. Loved this book!

*pant, pant* Man that was something to get through, but there’s a reason it is in my favorites shelf. My god, that is a great book. But (unpopular opinion) read an abridged version. The man was paid by the word, and he wrote things that were completely unnecessary to the progression of the story. My next goal is to find an abridged version that doesn’t take out too much but does leave out the extra, unneeded fluff that lined his pocket. Suggestions welcome.
