While this was difficult at times (like the 10-page long passages that list the names of soldiers or their deaths, one after another), it was definitely worth the effort it took to read it. The Lattimore translation is very poetic and beautiful at times, even when the poet is describing stabbing someone in the eye. I can't say I loved it, but I'm definitely glad it to finally have read it.

One star, there was no Trojan Horse or Achilles heel!!
In seriousness, five stars because what else are you going to give a story preserved from 800 BCE? Emily Wilson's translation was just as lucid and reveltory as her Odyssey.
I was once again shocked by the violence, and by the 5th grade playground moral sensibility of the heroes. I am left wondering how much or how little progress humanity has made since the Trojan War.

I swear, I REALLY TRIED. I still do not care at all. Maybe should have read the Eneide first a.k.a the reason I'm even reading this now. The constant war related infightings staight up put me in a reading slump. I'm so thrown off, I don't think I'll read the Eneide that soon. Let's try to get back into reading with PLEASURE first of all. I will probably read this book one day but not within this year that's for sure. (btw I actually read around 20+ pages, my page count here only pertains to the Preface, which is not included in the official page count.)

Read this for a mythology class. It did have adventure and such, but I'm not a huge fan of war novels, and things got a little graphic as the story developed. Great example of archetypes and the mythic cycle, not a favorite, but I don't regret reading it.
