adventurous challenging sad slow-paced

A little repetitive in places, but some of the battlefield imagery is very descriptive and beautiful. The scene where Hector slays Petroculus is especially well done.

Hector, Andromache, and Astyanax deserved the world and I stand by that.

A truly wonderful narration that makes you appreciate what it must have been like hearing this tale delivered in the intended oral tradition.

The sheer volume of Names that get thrown at you in short order (Book 2 I'm looking at you) can be somewhat overwhelming when you're listening, but the key is to latch onto the golden thread of the story and follow that rather than attempt to remember each name you hear.

For me, The Iliad has always been a cautionary tale about how the pride and ego of a man can be made the problem of millions. The gods may be capricious and petty in their machinations, but all the emotions they display are so blatantly human. We can't judge the gods without judging ourselves.

Emily Wilson has become my go to translation for Homer, and the notes that accompany the audio offer a fascinating insight into the language choices made in each book.

everyone saying this is THE translation is right. odysseus my controversial shady king i love you—that’s my man. achilles didnt have to do all that, but his grief is so profound and so utterly human that it transcends time and sticks a (figurative) spear right through my heart. war spares no mercy; grief is a violent, destructive force. zeus is on my shit list; just wait till i catch that fucker.
