A great story for all ages!

I never read this book as a child, but after seeing Hayao Miyazaki's take on the story in "The Secret World of Arrietty," I had to read it for comparison. I loved the movie, I'll put that out there first. The book was still good, but it didn't quite hold my attention as much. The characters are great, and the storyline follows the movie about 50/50, but that's expected nowadays when it comes to movie adaptations. The books is well written, and extremely rich in detail! If I find the time, I will read the sequels - they're probably worth it. The ending certainly leaves the reader curious for more.

A total classic, a story within a story which takes place in the haze of the late Victorian era.

"I'm bi-lingual. Bi-lingual people don't read as well" Seriously?

Okay. This was a sweet book. It just wasn't for me. Plus it ended on a cliffhanger. I think the story is carried out through out the series.

it was cute and fun. great book series for kids. i especially loved the end

This is one of those books I've always meant to read. The story is imaginative and full of creative detail. My favorite element was probably the descriptions of the ways the Borrowers repurpose human items. The framing of the narrative, an old woman telling the story to a girl as they work on a quilt, adds to the mystery.

I re-read this last week for a book club meeting (that I didn't end up going to), and I was surprised by how charmed I still was by it.

Nice concept. Very simple story for children, less engaging reading as an adult, which is unfortunate. Maybe makes my rating a bit unfair, but I'm going to stick to it. I didn't really understand why the story had to be told as a story within a story, from the "big person's" POV, but I honestly don't feel like continuing the saga with the following books in the Borrowers series. Excited to watch Arietty now that's I've read it tho!
