This is one of those books that make you see everyday, mundane objects in a new, creative light. Suddenly you really want to build a dollhouse by using graters, thimbles, corks, lace, ribbons, stamps, gloves and many other trinkets. I am not sure that this feeling will stay with me long enough to actually do anything about it (probably not), but nevertheless, even just that urge, enthusiasm and sudden awareness is quite enough for me. And the actual story is nice too! I listened to the audiobook, and it was great.
This was such a fun read aloud. It spurred imaginative discussion, and we couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Definately a favorite.
I have seen the film countless times but never read the book, despite always wanting to. I borrowed this from my local library and loved every second of reading this. I got so much more out of this than i ever did the film. Highly recommed this to anyone who wants to be captured into an amazing world.
I love the world and the idea of the Borrowers but I just couldn't get into this. The writing style was great but it just didn't click with me. I felt like the story was lacking something and it took forever to get anywhere. I do, however, recommend at least checking it out, maybe you'll like what I didn't.
Ultimately, I found the 'borrowers' attitude... not to my liking. They were pretty much greedy little thieves who stole whatever they wanted; all under the guise of borrowing... and because of that, I found myself completely lacking in compassion for them when they were discovered.
BUT... the Miyazaki film is great!
It totally made up for everything the book got wrong :)

Read-aloud with the kids, 9 and 7...we all loved it!
I wanted to read this book ever since I saw the Ghibli movie adaptation. Being an older book there were quite a lot of words I had never heard of, but overall the writing was beautiful. The story was itself was very 'slice of life'-y and the pacing was (as a result?) somewhat slow. It was an adorable, magical story however.
