Norton’s detailed descriptions of the Clock’s home, especially the different uses the characters have for the items they borrow, are beautifully written and yet utterly convincing no matter what the age of the reader. The novel also contains some dark undertones to it that I enjoyed discovering in my re-read of this childhood classic.
The narrative has a frame story which is about an older woman telling her young niece about the Borrowers. While the idea is interesting and allows the final line to be an effective surprise, the frame merely bookended the fantasy tale and the narrative would have arguably been just as enjoyable without it. I also found the characters from the frame story to be easily forgotten as they weren’t as developed as the characters from the main story. It is also important to note that some aspects of the narrative are dated, such as with the treatment of the young boy and the portrayal of Pod and Homily’s relationship, which may be something to consider before reading this book.

Who wouldn't love the premise of this book? On top of the amazing idea, it's a really great read. I used to love "cheese man" (The Borrowers 1998 movie in 5 year old speak) when I was a little girl and reading this was so much fun. Would 100% recommend this series to anyone looking to discover a magical world with a touch of realism.

This book holds a very special place in my heart. When I was sick with pneumonia in third grade, my friend's mother gave this book to me as a gift. She had read it when she had pneumonia, and she gave it to me in the hopes that I'd enjoy it as she did. And I did. I love this book. I love how clever and fun it is. I love Arietty. She's one of my favorite types of protagonists.
I'm not close with that friend anymore, but the impact of the gift still stays with me.

I was kind of obsessed with this(understatement of the century).
Certainly enjoyed this book much more than I was expecting!
Yet another wallow in childhood nostalgia with 'The Borrowers'.
This was one of of my favorites in childhood and I can only guess how many times I actually read it. It help up pretty well on re-reading in adulthood too--I should probably plan to re-read the rest of series at some point. Recommended for anyone who likes looking at the world a little sideways and wondering 'what if...?'
The possible content issues here are very minimal, and only concerns for the very youngest readers: Arrietty keeps secrets from her parents, to the point of outright lying a couple of times. Drinking alcohol is mentioned several times, with excessive drinking implied. The end with it's life and death situation could be stressful for sensitive young readers.
