2.5 this book was a struggle to get through for me. It was one of the first historical fiction books I’ve read and I think if you’re used to the genre you might like this book more than I did. But the author used so many words I didn’t know the meaning of I felt lost at some points. I did think she did a great job encapsulating Ireland during the time period and the horrific war that was going on. It’s the story of a young women who has a forbidden romance with a married man but I didn’t love their relationship at all. I can sorta see why many people like the book but for me it just wasn’t it.

Had to get the history teacher husband to give me a little refresher for this one because the context is important.

There was a lot I liked about this novel; it’s a compact little adrenaline rush, quick paced and suspenseful. It’s clear all the while something is going to happen, but you’re not quite sure what. The main character’s relationship is intense in the way only lusty young love can be. It’s steamy and direct in a few places, but it’s most alluring in the way she captures anticipation.

I don’t know how I feel about the way it ends, and while I won’t spoil it for anyone, don’t expect a nice, tidy bow. That said, it was a thrilling ride and unlike a lot of other contemporary novels I’ve read. I’d certainly give this author another read.
