I don't know why I keep reading Irish fiction. Must be the run up to St Paddy's Day. This one was okay. I kept hoping that the 23 year old dating the 40-something married man would realize she was being groomed, and we had the briefest glimpse, but...alas.

I really really loved this book. I thought it was so beautifully written. Very simple but really brought the whole world to life. The characters were all so interesting layered and the whole book introduced and explored so many themes. I thought it was a really good representation of how women think and the relationships were so so so well written and heartbreaking. I loved it- will read again!

I don’t know how I really feel this book because there are parts of Irish history I don’t understand. It also feels like the whole book happens over the last 50 pages and not so much before that, it did put me on the verge of tears and it did make me angry, but I think reading it with more context about The Troubles would’ve been better.

I hate to be like this, but I didn’t like it. The story is fair, but the characters were boring. I am a bit too young (ha!) to actually remember The Troubles, and the book does make it sound like it was a really disturbing time to live through, but that’s it. I did like the way they said oregano with an Irish accent. Oh wait, I just looked it up and they say it like they do in Italian, so I’m actually the one who saying it wrong.
