I’m from Belfast, born there in 1970. This book was a really accurate representation of my childhood. The relationships were well crafted and believable. If you’re not from there, or from that time. I don’t know that you’ll truly be able to
appreciate this book. It was heartbreaking.

I liked a lot of this; everyday life during the troubles etc, but I didn’t believe the love story for one moment. It just felt like there was nothing there.

i see why it’s a sad one, the last 100 pages did really grip me. but i didn’t have much of a connection with michael and cushla to really feel for them. i cared more for davy and his family (which isn’t a bad thing necessarily)

also, the prose felt off quite a few times. i managed to grasp it but some sentences felt iffy

to be honest this lingers between a 3.75 and a 4 so idrk! i still really enjoyed it
