Seriously good. Some powerful storylines set in the midst of the troubles in Northern Ireland. Very gripping - the words really draw you into Cushla’s life

Having not read anything about this period in Irish history before I found it really interesting. The cadence of this novel felt a bit like waves - slow and melancholy at times, fast and angry, but rhythmic. I think the dialogue sans-quotations was a key part in creating this sense of rhythm. I could hear the accents in reading this which was another part of the sense of wave-like rhythm. Ultimately I really enjoyed it. Dark, gripping, insightful and sad.
