I wish I had a college professor to walk me through all the symbolism and magic woven throughout this book. I’m certain the true beauty of this story was lost on me.

I devoured this book and it devoured me right back. This was everything I could ever hope for in a book mystery, romance, strong female lead, Scotland, and wolves. Let’s just say I’m ready to re-wild.

Dear editor, I am writing to inform you of a scientific error in this book. The book states “There were paper birches with bright red leaves…” Birch leaves are never red. Their fall foliage is yellow. Please correct in future editions.

With that out of the way…

Certainly an ambitious book — one that attempts to pull off eco-fiction, mystery, and romance all in one go. And to McConaghy’s credit, she manages it quite effectively. And what a clever title. I’ll have more thoughts on this later. I would consider 4 stars, but the birch leaves thing really threw me.

This book had some great moments, some compelling characters and some rich discussions of genuinely interesting ideas. Some being the operative word. This book was also very often clunky, the prose often overwritten, and the characterization often lacking in nuance. The book didn't just sooonfeed the reader it grabbed a handful of it's ideas before shoving them into the readers faces. And I agreed with most of it's ideas!
I think a lot of my issues with the book would have been solved by a switch from first to third person -- maybe the book would be less didactic unfiltered through the perspective of an incredibly didactic main character. The prose style was not for me but in audiobook form I spend through this book. I can't deny the pace was fast and the stakes were high and very real.
