Books about intense friendships and the violence & horror of adolescence are really up my alley, so I expected to love this. It was conceptually strong but fell short for me in a few places. I felt like the first person plural narration held me at arm’s length from the story where I wish it had sucked me deeper into the world and made me feel like part of the gang of brutes. And while I think the way that the form breaks apart towards the end of the novel is very smart, I wish the surrealism and horror had felt a little more present lurking underneath the surface in the first half, too.

really cool concept but the whole thing was too much of a secret for me, made it hard to really care about what was doing on. whole lot of nothing but maybe some interesting commentary on girlhood and friendship and the fear of being alone.
