Why are y'all rating this book so low??

I feel like it will be five stars when I reread it. The POV shift with a convoluted and metaphorical narrative arc makes the nuance a little hard to follow. But I feel like once you get it the “Virgin Suicides meets The Florida Project” description really holds up.

genuinely ????? describes the world / reality in a way that almost made me think it was sci fi? def related to the “mean girl” descriptions of girlhood / childhood. SO many deeper meanings here that it makes my brain hurt. what i wouldn’t give to discuss this read in an AP lit class lol

“Our mothers call us brutes when they want us to feel bad. It is what they call men they do not like, like our dads.” Brutes does an excellent job of capturing the feelings of awkwardness and weirdness that girls feel during the tween stages of life. While telling a story that is bathed in mystery and made me want to keep reading.
