As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes, with Joe Layden
*re-read*

Quotes: "It endures. In fact, like a good wine without iocane powder, it seems to get better with time."

"Mandy swears that barely a day goes by that he isn’t asked by someone, somewhere, to recite Inigo Montoya’s most famous words, in which he vows vengeance on behalf of his father. “And I never let them down,” he says."

"Andre had that effect. Each time you saw him, it was like meeting him for the first time. In the sense, one could never grow accustomed to his extraordinary size. Memory did not do him justice."

"He still managed to make me smile, in order to not make me feel bad. That's how special Andre was."

"So when you see Westley fall to the ground and pass out, that’s not acting. That’s an overzealous actor actually losing consciousness."

"It's true in life, as in the movies, that the greatest highs are often followed by the lowest lows."

"I ended by saying what was on my mind, and perhaps the minds of many. I wish we could go on shooting the movie forever. But sadly, all good things eventually have to come an end."

Review: I read this book close to when it released years ago and quite enjoyed it. Revisiting it this time in audio, and I'm so glad I did.  The all-star narration by people on the cast and crew. It's mostly told through Cary Elwes perspective.
In a sense, it's a loving tribute to a beloved story and film.  It's explains how The Princess Bride film had been rejected for years before it actually got made. And basically was made mainly because Rob Reiner was red hot as director and he insisted.

The casting, like Cary and others meeting each other. Some fun stories about Andre The Giant. The reverence the cast had for him all these years later spoke volumes of the time they spent with him.
Training, filming and so on. It's a book of gratitude. Being a part of something they knew was good. But didn't fully understand how culturally beloved it would become. Having some of those involved pop in and tell bits about their experiences made for a delightful listening experience.

If you're a Princess Bride fan, it's absolutely worth a read or listen. It's a glimpse into how much thought, effort, and care went into bringing that magical film to the screen.
An Inconceivable amound of stars. ⭐️

Thanks for reading 📚

I really wanted to like this book. I love both the book & the film, but this wasn’t great. There weren’t very many stories that were new. Very disappointed. 2.5 stars

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite books and movies. It's one of those very rare cases where I cannot choose if the book or movie is better. I've been wanting to read this book since I first heard about it, but I was wary, given how much the story means to me. You're never supposed to meet your heroes or learn how the sausage is made.

Elwes and his fellow cast-members are clearly aware of how beloved the movie is, and there is nothing in the book to ruin its magic. The comradery described in the book is as lovely and fun as you want it to be. I loved that they were able to get input from others involved in the movie. Since I listened to the audiobook, it was great hearing Billy Crystal's, Rob Reiner's, and other voices pop in to reminisce of their time on set.

Now I need to find time to watch The Princess Bride so I can catch the times a double was used for Elwes or when Andre the Giant need to be suspended onto a horse. I'm so glad I finally got around to reading this memoir. It just makes me appreciate the movie so much more.

With most of the cast & crew contributing to the audiobook, this felt like an audio play, or rather like an audio documentary.

Well done audiobook. I appreciated all the different actors contributing, I loved the narrator, learned a lot about a movie I remember fondly. And now I need to watch the movie again.
