Annie Proulx is just an amazing writer. I grew up around books (my father had literally over 6,000 of them in the house when we counted one time, and that was over 20 years ago!), and he's read pretty much every book he's ever bought. Plus I'm sure a ton he's checked out of the library.
Anyway, I asked him a few years back to make me a list of great authors and books, and Proulx was on that list. The one he recommended me to start with was That Old Ace In the Hole, which was fantastic. I remember wanting to immediately read something else she'd written.
That was several years ago. He sent me this one recently, and while reading the first paragraph, I was once again sucked into the world she creates with her word choice and her unique settings.
While this one wasn't quite as engaging for me personally as "Ace In the Hole," I'd still recommend it enthusiastically. I have a feeling her worst-written book would still reduce you to tears at times, and will make aspiring writers wonder if they should jsut give up.
I honestly don't think I've ever been put into the scenes of a novel in the same way as I have with hers.

A bit of a disappointment. The story is charming enough, as the transformation of Quoyle's character was both natural and affecting. But truth be told I just wanted to see my home - Newfoundland - represented in an award-winning novel, and Proulx's depiction felt unfamiliar to me. Only a few of the superficial elements seemed about right, while the spirit and the culture were foreign.* Read it for the story, but don't expect to find much of an authentic Newfoundland in it.
*An outport with a cruise ship terminal? So many incidents of sexual assault and child molestation that a weekly newspaper can devote an entire section to them? Almost no Newfoundland slang at all?
Huh?

My new favorite book. As good as Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe or even better.

The first few chapters of the book moved quickly. Once they get to Newfoundland everything slows down. I suppose that is clever because it reflects life in Newfoundland. I only didn’t really like the book because it was a bit boring. I found there was nothing driving me to continue reading besides the sheer will to finish before I go on my trip to Newfoundland.

I loved the digressions and backstories. I didn't understand a lot of the artsy descriptions.
At first I was stressed out waiting for a huge tragedy to befall a character I liked but instead life just happened around them. It was wonderful.
