I had avoided this book having seen (and been disappointed by) the film starring Kevin Spacey. As a lover of Annie Proulx’s short stories, I finally got around to reading this and what a joy it was.

Proulx pulls forgotten words out from the ground like long buried treasure. Never did I think I could become so invested in a world made up of an icy volcanic island, nautical knots and fishing ships.

I just finished this award-winning novel for another of my book groups. I saw the movie starring Kevin Spacey years ago and have wanted to read the book for a long time.

The author has a strange writing style, filled with odd little sentence fragments, but it grew on me after a while. It's a quirky novel, about a misfit man who's been through some terrible tragedies and moves to his ancestor's home in cold, barren Newfoundland with his two young daughters. Life there is challenging, but he slowly finds his way and feels like he belongs for the first time in his life. It's a warm, tender story, filled with unusual characters.

This is probably an excellent book. But I can not remember a single thing about it. So perhaps not.

I really enjoyed this slice of life type of book set in Newfoundland where even "the coffee has undertones of cod".
The passages deepen as the main character's view expands. A small family adapts to life by the sea all while taking in the echoes of the place's past.

As a Newfoundlander I was excited to read this book. Now that I have, I can say wholeheartedly that this book is terrible.

I was enjoying this but it was simultaneously causing one of the worst reading slumps I’ve ever encountered? I would be happy reading it but then avoid picking it up at any cost.
