I really like this book. Despite the fact that it contains its fair share of misfortune and sadness, it's ultimately an uplifting and hopeful book, full of characters who have genuine goodness. Proulx writes children very well--I especially like Sunshine, who has one of my favorite lines of dialogue in any book ("You're a rotten bitey shit!")--and the understated romance between Quoyle and Wavey is also wonderful.

Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment for me :(
I picked it up both because I'd heard good things about it, being considered a "classic" and all, and also because it's one of the few books you can get here that take place in Newfoundland.

However, I just couldn't get a connection to the characters. They were either wholly unlikeable or not very fleshed out so you couldn't even get a feeling as to what kind of people they were.
Lastly, and I know that's very nitpicky, but the names annoyed me. Who in the world would call their kids "Bunny" and "Sunshine"? If those were supposed to be nicknames, she should've mentioned it, or at least the actual names. There were other ridiculous names but in the two or so weeks I've finished the book, I actually already forgot (repressed? LOL) them.

I only finished reading because it was set in Newfoundland, as mentioned above. Very sad :(

Brilliant! Evocative writing that transports you to the heart of Newfoundland where you practically feel the wind whipping your face and feel as if you've known each character for a lifetime, each one a tender and complicated soul.
