A classic for good reason. Love the writing style, probably over identified with the main character. Love this book

QUICK REVIEW:
I remember why I don't consume a ton of thrillers - they tend to be pretty toxic. BUT the gasp-worthy tea spilled in this classic is top-notch.
I also listened at 1.7x speed, so maybe it felt even more heart pounding.

The old fashion patriarchy vibes tend to wear on me, I tend to feel that in time-period pieces. Especially when certain lines don’t age well.

Recommended:
- If you like counting all the red flags.
- If you want an “it's complicated” story about loyalty.
- If want to watch the movie /NETFLIX adaptation, but you want to see if the book is better.

One of the best books I have ever read. The way it went from a character study to mystery/crime was shockingly good. For most of the book, you can't even tell what genre it actually falls into. It starts as a very deeply psychological character study and slowly moves towards romance, before it unveils as a crime/mystery story in the final third of the book. All parts were equally masterfully created, but there were times the main character's battles deeply affected me as the descriptions dag through me and burrowed to my younger years and filled me up with melancholy. In all honesty, the way Daphne writes of the various internal battles of the main character and the descriptions of the interactions with other characters are nothing short of amazing. The way characters are brought to life is beyond good, it is impossible. Very true to life, very present and with the accompanying inner feelings and thoughts of the main character, the book becomes a very immediate experience.

Solid drama and mystery. I found the narrator much more irritating than the first time I read this book, but maybe my distance from age 21 is greater has made her more  unrelatable. The voice actors for this edition does a lovely job narrating all the characters and their various accents.

Overall the story is decent, but I was a little disappointed as the book didn't seem interesting/thrilling until 65%. Afterward, it picked up the pace and was good with a twist in the story but ended rather abruptly and flat for my liking.

The narrator seemed to live in her head rather than in reality. She imagined her life on a tangent based on a certain thought. She was too shy and insecure in the beginning, and she was scared of almost everyone. But slowly through the difficult times, she finds her security and becomes a new person. I like the way her character developed from a naive young lady towards a mature lady handling difficult situations.

The description of Manderly is amazing. The happy valley and the cottage near the cove, makes one want to move into the place. The character of Rebecca was well described, a sure-footed lady who left a mark on everyone even after her passing. All in all, a good story describing the period, how people lived, and the customs of the times, a classic.
