I don't usually like writing books (oddly enough) because good ones are ridiculously rare. I picked this one up because I adore the author, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. King wrote it after his accident--almost as a response--and it combines the story of how he began writing with the story of how hard writing was for him after the accident. And there are some gems in there for those of us who write as well.

I started this book knowing that I wasn’t the target audience but it is SK you know. I liked the bits about his life. The other stuff not so much. I don’t care about writing. I love that there are creative people who write me beautiful and exciting books so I can read them. But that’s it. Still I’m glad I read this.

This is my third time through this book.

Everytime that I read this, I get awe inspired at how simple he makes writing appear, and how overcomplicated we all make it for ourselves.

If there is a lesson to be learned it is this: You may never be a great writer, but you will never be a writer at all if you never finish the story to begin with.

Great stories are not written, my friends. They are re-written after you pour out the ideas onto the page and let them settle in their own dust and blood. Only later can you sift through the debris and find the nuggets of the good story and polish everything to be a readable thing down the road.

Find your voice, find your story, and there you will find yourself.

A curious beast. King manages to fuse his autobiography with his craft and it makes for an entertaining peek into a particular kind of writer and how he managed to be prolific, burn himself out and keep going through recovery. Not a universal writing guide (is there even one?) but absolutely riveting. Looking forward to re-reading.
