I hate to do that but when I read the synopsis and it basically said "celebrity dates her co-star in secret" my brain just subconsciously jumped to the 7 husbands of evelyn hugo and I hate to compare works because it's so unnecessary and disrespectful but my brain just did it so parts of my opinions ARE influenced by comparisons to t7hoeh, it just is
first of all I didn't care for derren, I thought the story would be about decklee and we'd go back to derren a few times but like .... t7hoeh monique style, not every other chapter
I think the time capsule hunt was too linear but I get that the author wouldn't bother to make it super elaborated because it kinda just isn't the point
I really liked that decklee stayed true to herself till the end and she always prioritised her career, we don't see a lot of that and although her actions were twisted to make her the villain-ish I still get her beyond how the other characters see her so that was nice
bottom line I wanted more of decklee and mickenlee, as individuals and as a couple, and having so much of derren necessarily means less of decklee soooo it's a choice and I personally wish that hadn't been the choice that was made

Thank you so much to PENGUIN GROUP, Penguin Young Readers Group, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book early in exchange for an honest review.

Every Time You Hear That Song follows 17 year old Darren as she and her friend Kendall as they look for clues left behind by country legend Decklee Cassel in order to find the lost album and 3 million dollars.

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the relationship between Darren and Kendall as well as the hints we learned about how Decklee made it big back in the 70s. The twists were also crazy! I did not guess a single one of them.

I think Darren knowing what the clues and locations were immediately was a little unrealistic but it made the book fly by and led to all the twists at the end so I enjoyed it.

This book is part of my graduate YA literacy class as a future librarian - this book is so unbelievably good & now & forever a touchstone book. There are no words I can say in this moment besides that that can encapsulates my feelings about this wondrous book. Thank you for writing it - & I’m so incredibly grateful that I found this book at the time I did. Librarians are supposed to give books to readers - & good librarians will give books to readers that the reader needs in whatever time or space the reader is at & I am again so grateful for this book in this stage of my life. I am baring my soul out here lmao and this book is just that good & exactly what I need in this moment in my life. Aaa
