thanks to netgalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
maybe there's something beautiful to being known like this. maybe being seen isn't a curse.
"every time you hear that song" is a book about ambition, drive, and how a small town can shape you. being from a small town in the south, surrounded by country music mainly sung by white men, this book resonated with me in more ways than one. i am a LOVER of characters — characters that feel real, that feel flawed, that I can have empathy for, and the characters in this novel certainly apply. the imagery Voris creates of both small town back roads and the feeling of seeing a big city for the first time really stuck out to me. the journeys we follow throughout these pages were exciting and bittersweet at the same time. this was a really quick and fun read!

This is great if you’re looking for a simple and quick story. I think what I didn’t love was the general story. It felt a bit gimmicky for my taste. I really loved the ending, Derren’s take on queerness was what really drew me in. If the book had more of that as its focus I think I would have bought in more to the story/the characters. That being said, how fast the storyline goes is also what brings down my rating. There wasn’t enough character building for me to love these characters.
Graphic: Homophobia, Terminal illness
Minor: Hate crime, Toxic friendship
Decklee you are a selfish b tch!
I love how both stories are shown but I was hoping to see more of Decklee story cause it got short in the last chapters
Overall was a good nice story

not giving this a number rating because i genuinely cannot! the first half of this was so different to the back half - it’s also somewhat categorized as a romance, which is FALSE! - which led to some confusion of tone/message for me. i think both of the narrators are so interesting and layered, which i loved. i do feel like decklee wasn’t extended a lot of grace or even the effort to understand her from our present day characters despite being such a huge part of the story, which is something i will be thinking about after reading. the ending felt quite rushed and while i really appreciate voris letting the mess and pain be messy and painful and the high school romance be realistic and healthy, it just didn’t give me enough after the whole book was building and building. not my favorite but also it’s really making me think, which to me is a good thing.

Every Time You Hear That song is two stories that cross paths. Daren Purchase is desperate to get out of her small town, but with limited funds it’s going to be hard. Then during her favorite country singer’s funeral it’s announced that the deceased, Decklee Cassel set up a scavenger hunt worth $3m. Darren grabs her friend Kendall and they head out on a road trip. The two stories are told every other chapter, so the reader follows Decklee’s story starting in the 1960’s. Daren’s story is today and her discovering who her idol actually was. The one thing they always say is never meet your idol. The characters really jump off the page and are really likable. The book flows beautifully making it easy to get lost in the story.
