I had been watching Sanderson's YouTube lectures during the lockdown and there were so many mentions to The Final Empire that I thought I would give it a go or I might encounter spoilers. So I went to Amazon and discovered I already had this series and the first three Stormlight Archive books in my library. The guy is famous, I love fantasy, and I suspect there was a sale.
I adored this book and it is only because I try not to read too many of one genre in a row that I didn't launch into the second one straight away. If you like fantasy, these are great. Really good magic systems and superb characters.

I have tried to read this book many times over the years, but always stalled early on - I managed to power through the slow beginning finally, and once I did I found it very enjoyable! The magic system is very crunchy, but I personally like that sort of thing, and it was explained enough times to begin to be easy. Quite a few unexpected twists that had me gasping, but they feel obvious in hindsight because of foreshadowing, which is fun! I liked the characters, though I think in general they are weaker than the plot. Excited to see if the sequels maintain the tension, and I'm SO interested in finding out more about the future antagonist!
