challenging

I strongly recommend the audiobook - Tagac performs her writing and throat sings. Also, this is a serious story that sits with some difficult spaces and ideas. Normally in a review I'd include content warnings, but in this case, I feel that does the story a disservice. This book is a journey, and like all journeys, it is not for everyone.

I rarely go with partial stars, but this was definitely higher thana 3 for me, not quite a 4.  The writing is really good and I enjoyed way the content was broken up with sketches, poems, more traditional story telling.  There was some devastatingly beautiful writing in this book.

Such unique and creative storytelling! Through prose, story and poem, we learn about her Indigenous culture and gain a deeper understanding of their perspective and relation to nature, life and the universe. A beautiful read that can't be forgotten ❤️

I really wanted to like this, but I just can’t. The writing wasn’t good in my opinion, whether prose or poetry, it felt very off. Like someone trying to run a marathon without first trying to run 5k.

Beautifully done audio, read by the author, and including some of Tagaq's own throat singing which was an experience. Content is traumatic, some of the more traumatic scenes transition into some spiritual / folklorish fantasy type passages that are confusing, but also interesting to interpret. That was an exciting part of book club - each member sharing their interpretation of the content. Highly recommend the audio due to Tagaq's cadence and flow, and also recommend reading with a group. Very insightful and enlightening discussions to be had!

This is a strong recommend for lovers of poetry and experimental prose writing, but maybe caution for a reader at a Poetry 101 level (like me).
