Trigger warning for sexual abuse.

I don't have much to say, and in most ways I shouldn't have much to say. A huge part of this book is as far away from my own experiences as it can be, but it remains such an incredibly powerful text. The author has such a brilliant brain!

Wow. Although this book was challenging at certain moments to follow, it was incredible. Split Tooth has the most effective use of imagery I think I have ever read. I felt my face stinging from cold, I could feel the Northern Lights. I cringed away from some of the subject matter. Peaceful moments of childhood are juxtaposed with horrible events that make this book profoundly moving. Tanya Tagaq is an incredible writer, and I will read anything she publishes.

Yes to the prose, which aims mystical female empowerment at the bildungsroman of growing up in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. There is nothing else like this story. Sadly, no to the poetry, which is kind of anti-poetry: words that vibrate little (and arrangements that are less arbitrary than simply habitual) but assault the reader with single-mindedness. Like its title might suggest, this is a ruthless read that spares no sympathy for its characters or readers.
