Perhaps it's not the book, it's me, but I couldn't engage. It has lovely poetic writing, but the skipping between sections I could follow and these abstract mythological parts, it just didn't give me enough of a storyline to attach myself to. There were bits that you could start to feel for the protagonist, then for me the other bits, were just wondering what's going on. Maybe I would have enjoyed more if it was fully in either of these realms.

Most of it is mystery to me where I will look to articles for understanding. However, it was worth every minute of the read. Complex, dark, and mythological.

Split Tooth had me hooked as soon as I read the early passages about substance abuse, sexual assault, and pedophilia. It is jarring. My expectations were so far from what these pages truly hold. The mix of poetry and prose is hauntingly beautiful. The way the book reads like someone telling stories from their childhood in a not-quite-but-mostly linear sequence, broken into small fragments of time. The memories that cling to us due to their weight or the memories that cling to us for reasons we can't seem to conjure.

Then... it took a turn. I was, honestly, perplexed and almost disturbed by the later half of the book. I closed the book almost in a daze, not sure what to make of what I had just read.

This isn't like any book I've read before, that's for sure.

(Did Not Finish)

I don't often give up on books, but I had to with this one. I fully understand that as a white American man, I am not coming from the same background as the author and will never; however, having said that, this book was *too much* for me to finish. The two stars represent the fact that the author is a multi-talented artist, poet, throat-singer, and writer who can create amazing art and write in vivid detail. But I just couldn't finish this book, particularly after a single *scene* I couldn't get past. Just couldn't. This is a beautiful book, but this just isn't for me. Be warned going into this; it needs *all* the trigger warnings.
