Such a beautiful book. So many questions, but so many beautiful conversations came out of this book. I will also recommend the audiobook since her throat singing is in it too.
What happens before birth and resumes after death -- this is more real than the brief spark of life. Our lives just carry the physical burden of carrying energy forward. We put on suits of meat as training, as a challenge. We all know this is temporary.

This book is unlike anything I've ever read. Part prose, part poetry, part novel, part memoir, part realism, part spirit world, but wholly transporting. Tagaq immediately draws you into her character's world. How she sees the land, the people, everything. This was a look into Inuit culture that I have not encountered, and was sobering and fascinating. As she draws closer to a sort of spiritual destiny, the verse that populates her mind starts to cohere a bit more, and we see just what is at stake in her choices, and what she must give up in order to survive.
I'll admit to not always 100% understanding everything that was going on, and there are certainly metaphors here that go beyond my understanding, but the overall effect of the language and journey was enough to carry me along. Tagaq is an absolutely stunning writer, and you can really feel how finely crafted this entire book is. It is short, but not for lack of depth. Every line rings with truth, and is all in service to the greater narrative. I will admit to putting down the book for longer spells than I perhaps intended to. Some of this was due to it being a very intense read, and that I sought out respite from some of its darker moments. But whenever I did pick it up, I always felt engaged with it.
A few reviews mention that the audiobook version features Tagaq's (award-winning!) throat singing between chapters. I may have to check it out down the line to truly get the full effect of this book. I would love to read more fiction and poetry from Tanya Tagaq and see how she further incorporates her craft and art into her writing.
