This book - which is a mixed-media fused with surrealism, contemporary, and mythology - was such a challenge to comprehend and go through, but frankly, I think that I'm not meant to. So instead of trying to organize its structure to form a story, I just sat and listened. I listened to the narrator's beautiful prose. I listened to their throat singing. I listened to the tune of their emotions. I just listened.

If you're interested to further understand this book, here are some reviews that I found substantial and interesting:

Beautifully written. The story of the nameless narrator is interspersed with poems, and definitely crosses over into something like magical realism. The story is sad, but also happy. Especially in the first part of the book, I found there was a lot of intermingling of the joy of childhood, while also confronting drug abuse and sexual violence. The second part had more of the magical realism and got kind of strange. I suspect there’s a lot going on that I didn’t understand, and I kind of wish I’d read this when I had more brain power to devote to it. I did enjoy it though.

Not sure how to rate this
WOW, this was so raw and dark. the throat singing was enjoyable as I had never heard it before. The poetry part was interesting, but the story throw was depressing and so dark I had to stop and take a break. I'm empathetic so parts were hard for me to get through even the last part dealing with her twins. I was like what did I read.. Read this for Skoden Readathon.

wholly original

Tanya Tagaq’s autobiography braids mythology, poetry, and mysticism in this haunting narrative. Tanya ushers her into her inner world in the sea ice amongst arctic animals: polar bears, seals, and delectable foxes. I consumed this book in audiobook form and is one of the best audiobooks I have ever heard. Tagaq, a world famous throat singer shares her craft and breath between chapters. Her voice and incantation is an exhalation. Wow.

Lyrical and brutal, visceral but obscure. I struggled a bit with the dense lyricism and the dreamlike narrative. At times I felt a bit more editing could have helped distill the intent of the text. But it felt like a meaningful read that transported me to an unfamiliar and vivid life and worldview.

Feeling a bit like I took a dark tumble and woke up in a different realm. This was deeply intimate and intense and Tagaq has a way with words unlike anything I’ve read before. This is a must for audiobook … left me speechless.

I did not understand or enjoy this book at all. I was very confused the whole time I was reading it. Some parts are described quite graphically so check the tw.
This book was just not for me.
