Once and for All

Sarah Dessen

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway, and it's the first book by Sarah Dessen that I've read. It was a light, fluffy read, but I felt like it was well-balanced, with some seriousness thrown in. I found the characters to be quite likeable, and the relationships believable.

I ended up really liking this book. It was a very quick, light read, YA chic lit for sure. But it was really well done and I loved the characters. YALSA Top Ten list.

I really liked this book. whenever you read one of Sarah dessens books you have this warm feeling in your heart. and this book is practically the definition of that. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone. the cover is beauty and doesn't wear easily. all of the characters are so nice and well devloped. And will stay with you for a while. Louna and Amorose and their relationship is so sweet and cute and is an awesome sort of romcom (And I Love Romcoms) And each of their past are very good even if it is a bit sad sometimes but its a great book and definelty read it!!

It was cute but kind of predictable!

As a lifelong Sarah Dessen fan, there is nothing more comforting to me than cracking open one of her books. As usual, she didn't (really) disappoint.

Louna is the daughter of a wedding planner; despite (or because of) that, she does not believe in true love. Then an unconventional guy comes to town and ends up working for her mom. He is determined to win her win her over, and throughout the summer he tries to get her to open up to the idea of letting love in. She is haunted by her last boyfriend and their tragic end; can she finally feel okay moving on?

So here's my beef with this book: I really didn't feel connected to Ethan (Louna's boyfriend). They were together ONE NIGHT, which I know of forever in teen years. I would have liked to see more development in that story line. I know his death was obviously insanely tragic and that would definitely cause the insane amount of grief she felt, but "I love you" after one night? Unsure. Hence 4 instead of 5 stars. Otherwise, perfection.

I’ve always heard Sarah Dessen is the queen of romance so I just picked up the only one that was available at the library while I was browsing. Apparently that was a mistake. This book was not good 😭 first strike (on me tbh) I read she had a job and a “serial dater” so I assumed these were adults. I was appalled that they were teens STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL :,) actually like is Ambrose in school?? He is such a strange character he just flits in and out but we actually know nothing about him. He gets no characterization or progression and again we know nothing about him. Why does he walk everywhere, what does he do outside of dating and his new job, why is his family okay with him barely being home??

The main character was fine, I felt really sad for her dealing with her trauma cuz what happened to Ethan was so tragic. I will say I side eye their entire relationship playing out (as like 15 year olds) in one night including her doing the deed on the beach?? Sounds sandy 🥴

And then the romance between the two main characters was just so unconvincing. The bet makes NO SENSE how are we supposed to root for them when Ambrose is literally gone half the book w his committed girlfriend… AND THEN the big “climax” - hey I told your friend I like you. Sorry about ur dead boyfriend.

????

How was that what you went with. Don’t even get me started on the getting a DIFFERENT BOYFRIEND and then the “car crash” and bringing home YOUR NEW BF TO BREAK UP W UR PLACEHOLDER BF.

This book sucked hahaha. I read some other reviews and maybe this is an anomaly for Dessen? I’m not inclined to try again tbh lol but maybe once I forget how bad this was. Maybe I’ll try more of her earlier stuff if I do, maybe by 2017 you start running out of your best material :,)

A great read, just like all of Dessen's books for me. Once and for All has just enough substance to not be "fluffy" but also maintains her signature lightheartedness throughout. As most of her books do, this one also had me crying at points and then laughing five minutes later.
Dessen is great at using her stories to show that everything does not have to be perfect in life, nor does every problem have to be solved in order for you to move on/be happy.
