I love Nghi Vo’s writing, she packs so much into such short books.

first book was solid but THIS is the good shit. love the shift in narrators between one who's heard the story as it was passed down and one who wasn't directly involved but still has a more personal attachment. and the story in general leaned more heavily on the fantastical. obviously i ate it up. still missed the bird though...

If you enjoy Asian folklore and lush worldbuilding, this is a short and sweet tale that might be up your alley. The dual storytelling was a narrative device I thought worked well.

I really love these novellas and how they take apart the art of storytelling and the creation of history.

We are once again following Chih the cleric on their story-gathering missions, only this time, the story found her by accident. In order to keep three tigers from eating them and their guide, Chih tells the story of the tigers' ancestor. Showing how the same story can be told completely differently depending on point of view and how stories might change shape over time, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain demonstrates how there are always at least two versions of a story how we may never really know the truth if there is one.

Vo really is an excellent storyteller and I appreciated how Chih acknowledged that stories are repeated only as they are written in the archives. But that version of the story may be lacking
