I read this before anything else in the series, but was promised it was a stand-alone and it was! Had no issues following the story and the breaks between Chih telling the story and the tigers interrupting was a really cool way to frame everything. Plus like, mammoths. Love those guys. Quick read, interesting book structure, good plot!

The perfect little nugget of a story ❤️ Chih heads up into the mountains on a mammoth, almost gets eaten by three tigers, then tries to survive the night by sharing the story of how their tiger ancestor fell in love with a scholar. There's some spirited and very amusing debate about who's getting the story right. The audiobook narration for this is pitch-perfect. By turns funny and sexy and super gay. Picked this up on a whim and so glad I did.

“‘Eat,’ the tiger said graciously. ‘It’s hardly our custom to starve people telling us stories.’”
