“As the sun grew ripe and started to drop towards the horizon, Scholar Dieu read the poem, and as she did, it came to Ho Thi Thao how very beautiful she was. She had been beautiful in bed for three nights, which was important, and she was beautiful now, when she was angry at having her way blocked. It came to Ho Thi Thao that perhaps she wanted to learn how else the scholar was beautiful, and even in what ways the scholar might be ugly, which could also be fascinating and beloved.”
4 stars !!
This is so beautifully written and unlike anything I’ve read before. A story like this is a gem in which I’ve found a warm type of comfort. I wish I had been told stories like this as a child, the kind that tugs at my heartstrings and leaves me wanting for more. It is a privilege to be able to consume Nghi Vo’s words and I wish I could be able to write this extraordinarily one day.

Loved the story in this one, but also really appreciated the descriptive imagery in this novella a lot.
Chih returns in a new tale. Threatened by tigers, they tell a story in an attempt to prolong their life (as well as the mammoth scout and her mount). Occasionally, the tigers provide commentary, giving Chih a fascinating glimpse into tiger culture.
It's all about storytelling- who tells the tales, what the audience is expected to understand, and how the same event can be interpreted very, very differently. It subtly builds the world introduced in The Empress of Salt and Fortune.

i enjoyed the first one a lot, but this one was mesmerizing. i love the back and forth between the versions of the stories and where they eventually end up. the tension the tiger sisters bring is delicious. i can see myself coming back to this one.
