This had some lovely stories. Some ghost stories, some romantic, some magical, and some reminded me of Roald Dahl.

Me gusta bastante que hablen del origen y el como el cristianismo invadió las tradiciones paganas y las cambio a su manera pero quitando eso son cuentitos como los que nos contaban de niños o como esas películas navideñas que todos conocemos y amamos

Well worth being an annual Christmas read.

Love the variety of holiday stories and the audiobook version has instantly become an annual listen during holiday preparations with some seasonal music planning in the background and some eggnog or mullied wine or apple cider.

This is why I don't like short stories.

Nice Christmas reading. As usual with short story collections I much preferred some stories over others (especially liked the mountain climbing one). Can't wait to explore more of Winterson's writing!

2020 (first read): This collection of stories (and narrative recipes!) is all the Christmas feelings and experiences in one: cheer, tradition, surprise, regret, loss, mystery (even the scary kinds), hope, forgiveness, karma and comeuppance, wonder and magic. Buy a copy now, pack it away with your Christmas decorations, and voila, you’ve given yourself the first gift of next year’s season.

[From an earlier update: I read the introduction and knew I needed to own this. When my order arrived I was so pumped to see I got the Vintage edition I’d requested (the used book store sometimes doesn’t send the right copy...) and it is GORGEOUS. Gold foil detailing on the covers (the front is the start of the meal, the back the end of dessert); two-color printing throughout (in a lovely medium pink); sweet endpapers, flaps, illustrations, and dropcaps; good page stock; and stories + recipes. Yes!]

I also listened to a bit of this on audio (read by the author) and it was great too. This goes straight into my permanent holiday rotation.

2021: I listened to the audio this year, and the narrator is AMAZING. Just…astoundingly good, with incredible range. The recipes are all narrated by Winterson herself, and she’s great too. I read/played some of these for my kids, and my mom read it this year too. There’s really something in here for everyone.

2024: Reread (audio/paper) most of this again because my 12yo loves it (the spooky stories especially).

I loved this, as I mostly love all Jeanette Winterson. There's something quite comforting about this book, with recipes punctuating the beautifully crafted short stories. It's like sitting by the fire swapping good stories and good food between friends. The short stories never cease to amaze me, the amount of heart, fear, love and loss within such small stories is fascinating. I loved each and everyone for different reasons. I would recommend this Christmas feast of literature to anyone.
