Weird book, and not a very fast read. There is a lot of ambiguity throughout the whole book, which I suppose makes sense with the recurring theme of ghosts and all. I was also a little bummed that I was able to predict the plot twist that was supposedly going to blow my mind (sorry, Buzzfeed).

With that being said, I did think the book was well-written and enjoyed the writer's considerable vocabulary. I would be interested in reading Setterfield's other book.

The spooky gothic vibes were perfect for the dreary fallish weather we've been having

I liked the story within the story, but found myself skipping past Margaret's real life so I could read more about Vida Winter's. I have to admit, I got bored and skipped to the end, so I'm marking this as 'didn't finish'.
All in all, it wasn't a bad read, but I think it could have focused less on the minutiae of Margaret's life and been about 100 pages shorter.

Creepy and kind of ageless. The ending felt flat to me, as did Margaret's suddenly-intimate relationship with Miss Winter. Why did she have her cut her hair? Where did that connect? I loved John-the-Dig and the Missus and Hester--they really felt like some good classic characters. I wanted to love Aurelius too, but the whole my-family-or-twin-abandoned-me thing felt underdeveloped. I loved his cakes, I loved the story of the old house--reminiscent of Angels and Insects by A.S. Byatt; at least, the incest was. Ambrose felt too quickly interjected as well. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was easy to get in to and many of the characters were delightful, as was the premise. But I just wish she'd throw a little more development in so that you don't feel so disconnected from the very dramatic bits.
