June Haywood and Athena Liu are "friends"--kinda. They met in college and kept in touch, mainly because they lived near each other and both published books. Athena is wildly successful, writing from her perspective as an American Chinese, telling her parents' stories, while June's debut get little to no attention. When Athena and June have a casual meet up, their drinking leads to them going back to Athena's apartment and having a pancake eating contest. Unfortunately, Athena chokes on a throatfull of pancakes, and June's attempts at the Heimlich manuever fail to save her. On the plus side, Athena's rough draft novel on the role the Chinese played in WWI is RIGHT THERE, and to June's knowledge, no one has seen it, or even knows what it's about. So June takes it, polishes it, whitewashes it a bit, and passes it off as her own. It's an instant hit! Until people start noticing how similar June's style is to Athena's. As plagiarism accusations begin to pile up, June twists herself into tighter and tighter defensive circles, swearing that she won't let these accusations "silence her voice."

This book is amazing in all sense of the word. Kuang uses all the excuses a Karen would to justify stealing another person's story. The layers of satire in this book, covering the publishing industry, the expectations of the "model minority", and the twisted perception that no one wants a white woman's (or man's) story anymore, and that it's so easy for a diverse author to get published and "make it" in the industry. Yellowface also goes the step further to show that neither June nor Athena are wholly likeable. Athena is shown to be narcissistic and opportunistic, and June uses the fact that Athena stole one of June's life experiences to get published in the college journal to justify her stealing Athena's manuscript. The book is an absolute trainwreck of entitlement, and it is glorious!

It's such an interesting book.   I wish I could put this story's intriguing ideas and viewpoints into words.  I loved that the story is told from the perspective of the author who steals another's work.  It dragged a bit in the middle but otherwise was a quick read.

“I’m not a racist, but…” the novel! A deeply engaging exploration of a character that is rarely likable but always interesting. It’s a big departure from Kuang’s epic fantasies, but the same level of attention is applied to the very real world in which we live.
