The story unfolded so nicely. It also affirmed that being single is awesome.. I can't break my own heart.

July 2012 RS book group

The characters were well-written though both Lucy’s mother and his girlfriend/wife are essentially the same. Of course Lucy and his father and son are similarly the same. Is this done to indicate how much temperament runs in families, or out of laziness in writing?

It look a little while to get into the groove of reading this one, but once I got it, it was smooth sailing and I wanted to keep reading. Some of the ending is rote and also out of place (did Russo need to introduce Kayla in order to wrap it up? I don’t think so...

But as an overall read, it was a good novel. It has it all: love, loss, regrets.

A beautifully written multigenerational saga of a boy, his town, his family and friends. We follow Louis C. (Lucy) Lynch's story as he writes his memoirs looking back over his life.

I loved this novel. It is beautifully written with both poignancy and melancholy and truthfulness. I loved the characters, the situations, the settings- the story. I’ve not stopped thinking about it- even dreaming about it- since I finished the last page.

I finally finished it... a month later! Anyway, I always love Russo's books and this one was no exception. He is so good at writing about small town life and making the characters so real and likable, even the ones that you don't like. It's cool that many of them take place in a town where I once lived too. The only thing I didn't like was the ending, I think it's sort of cheating when books end the way this one did.

This is the book I read, not the other Bridge of Sighs. The protrait of middle America was sympathetic. (I realize upstate New York isn't in the middle of America, but it can be just as isolated.)

Russo’s writing is leisurely, and he likes to muse. Still, he creates some complex and attractive characters and makes you want to contemplate their lives with them. He is also one of the few writers willing to explore the theme of class in America, a theme that is very important to this novel.

FINALLY finished this book - i hated it! - it was for a book discussion group, or i wouldn't have finished it - who cares? - at the very least, badly in need of a good editor - i wonder if this would have ever seen the light of day if empire falls hadn't been published - the only reading experience i've ever had that was as painfully boring is when i had to read great expectations in 9th grade - and no, i'm not comparing richard russo to dickens, although i've never read anything else by dickens either

The conflict in this book is on a very human scale which, for me, made it a little difficult to read at times, as it hinges so much on interpersonal relationships and self doubt. This is not a tragedy: it's just a book about adults coming of age.
