Rating: 3,8 rounded to 4 stars for a first in a series.
Too many real private problems for my taste, could have done without them.

Listening to the audiobook, the scene transitions weren't always immediately clear, leading to occasional confusion. I don't feel that the deteriorating relationship between Henley and Rob is necessary. Why must all detectives have a bad home life? Otherwise, I thought the case was well-developed and it kept me interested.

This was really slow, and by the time things finally started happening at the end I just didn't really care. It was hard to relate to the characters or even like them. There were too many different plot lines trying to be achieved at once, making it hard to follow along.
I knowwww it's fiction, but they're not going to put a detective back in the game on a case that is eerily similar to how she nearly got killed and was on medical leave for. It didn't sound like they were starved for detectives so she had to do it. She very clearly was not okay, and it's odd that anyone would continue to let her be on the case,
especially since victims are jurors in the trial against Olivier that got thrown out and a new jury had to be selected.
I'm also really over the trope of the serial killers targeting the detectives or people involved in trying to catch them.

This seemed like it would have been right up my alley for an enjoyable book, but I just couldn't get into this one.

Sort of feel the book could have been split into two: the backstory and the present. Agree with other reviews, if some was cut out it would have read more as an intense crime novel. Overall enjoyed it and interested to read more from this author.

I listened to the audiobook version and I have to say that Diveen Henry’s performance takes the book from a 3.5 to a 4.25. For example, sometimes I would read along with the book and feel confused about dialogue. Matheson’s sense of character voice is STRONG, don’t get me wrong, but it can be difficult to parse through who is saying what. Henry’s distinct characterizations and the consistency with which she delivers each and every voice were crucial in my ability to comprehend the plot and maintain interest.
