I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and were not affected by the free copy.

Charlie Thorne has escaped the CIA and made it to the Galapagos Islands, spending her days surfing and reading. Until one day, Esmerelda Castle appears on her front door, telling Charlie that Charles Darwin also left a mysterious clue to a scientific discovery behind.

I love this series. We have a strong, smart female character with an interest in math and science-everything we need for middle grade girls! But she is not a girly girl and the mystery and action will appeal to boys as well. I'm a little bothered by the fact that this 12-year old girl basically vanished from the face of the Earth and no one questions it? We already knew this from the first book, but her parents are terrible people.

I identified with Charlie so much in this book. Not because I'm a genius or anything, but because she is so aware of the fact that as a general rule, the human race cannot be trusted with important things. We (the human we) will exploit things for our own gain, every single time. I loved the little bits of history and science that the author snuck in. Almost like he's tricking people into learning. ;)

This book is perfect for middle grade readers. I can't wait for the next book.

I read [b:Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation|43259902|Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation (Charlie Thorne #1)|Stuart Gibbs|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566731884l/43259902._SY75_.jpg|67082555] and thought it was fantastic, so when I saw a second book, I knew I had to read it as well. These books are action-packed adventures with lots of history and science woven into them as well. In this second book of the series, Charlie is attempting to hide out in the Galapagos Islands when she is asked to help decipher a coded message apparently carved into the lower shell of a Galapagos tortoise by Charles Darwin. Thus begins the dangerous race across South America and into the heart of the Amazon rainforest to find the treasure Darwin discovered and then never talked about once back in Europe. Charlie is incredibly smart, and the dynamic between her, her half-brother Dante, and his CIA partner Milana is great.

I appreciated that Stuart Gibbs included an author's note at the end of this book to clarify the aspects of the story that were true about Darwin and those that were pure fiction. These books do include some violence, so I would classify them towards the upper end of middle grade. I will absolutely be adding this series to my middle school class library.

How did I miss the first book in this series? Charlie is charming - smarter than anyone else (including the CIA), adventurous and with a serious sense of right and wrong. Explanations for many of the ideas are folded into the text in a way that doesn't talk down to readers, making the learning as fun as the adventure Charlie is on. When is the next book coming out?

We were hooked on Charlie Thorne on the first book! We love everything by Stuart Gibbs. This book resonated with us, especially at the end when Charlie gets it, how some things are better off left "undiscovered."

If you've read book 1, this is a loose continuation of that storyline, which has Charlie as the only person on Earth who now knows Einstein's secret last equation and it makes her a wanted person, for governments and nefarious crime syndicates world-wide.

So when a would-be envrionmentalist seeks her opinion at the exact same time a Russian spy comes to pick her up from her remote hiding spot in the Galapagos Islands, you kinda know where she's headed next, right? To find an amazing, secret discovery made by Charles Darwin a century ago on his famous sea voyage.

Turns out, there's a bunch of these secrets that famous and brilliant scientists have kept hidden all around the world, and the CIA wants to get Charlie on board finding them for the agency.

Just keep in mind, as you're reading, Charlie's 25 steps ahead of anyone trying to catch up to her. It turns out, she's pretty much figured out what Darwin kept hidden in a chest he tried to bring home from his voyage but the ship captain ordered destroyed because the world wasn't ready for it. Couldn't handle it. Can we handle it now?

Clearly, that's debatable.

This is a thrilling, action-packed adventure spy/thriller that's quickly turning into the best series Gibbs has written to date! (Although we still love Teddy & Summer -- keep the Fun Jungle books coming, too!). This is sure to be a hit gift. Enjoy.

Like all of Stuart Gibbs' stories, I really liked it. Gibbs is an excellent writer and comes up with interesting and different stories all the time. This second book in the Charlie Throne series takes the reader into the Amazon Jungle. It's extremely well described and it made me wonder if Gibbs hadn't gone to the Amazon (at the end of the book I found out that he had!). So he's created this story from first hand knowledge and it shows.
The story is filled with a "how is she (Charlie) going to get out of that one" and "what will she find" kind of feelings. You'll find it was well worth your investment of time in reading "Charlie Thorne and the Lost City."
