The third book in the Winternight trilogy, and by far the best.
In the first two books, I found myself frustrated along with Vasya, at not knowing quite what was going on. We were (purposely) left in the dark, so that the answers and understanding we were looking for came together in this book. As it happens, I think it was done very well, but if I hadn't fallen in love with the folklore and magic in the story, I may have not made it to this final book. I'm really glad I did.

I rarely write reviews on the books I read but my gosh, I love this series. When I was gifted the first book a couple of years ago from a dear friend and started reading it, I almost instantly got hooked on the storyline and the characters. I don’t know whether it’s the Russian folklore, the characters, the overall vibe of the books, I just can’t help loving it. So when I was gifted the other two books last Christmas, I instantly started reading them and finished the last book this morning. I will be missing the magical feeling every chapter left in me, but I am also so happy that I can enter this world once again.
This was really special. Thank you, Katherine.

I wasn't feeling drawn to reading it. Putting it down was easy and I had to actively remind myself to pick it up again.

A perfect culmination of the series—staging the battles between Christianity and pagan ritual as well as a united Rus’ against a foreign power at the same time with the same stakes: the identity of Russia.
Ugh the end of an era. I sometimes delay finishing a series that I love… just because I’m not read to say goodbye, or maybe I don’t want the story to wrap up too differently from my imagination. Either way, this was a gorgeous tale of love and fear and acceptance and faith and tradition. I’m going to miss these characters so much.
I never would have independent selected a series based on Russian mythology, but I am so glad this was shared by a friend. I did get a little lost in all the naming traditions and in some of the places and events of history, sending me to pause reading to research the details. Nevertheless I will cherish this series.
