Reminded me of Harry Potter, but it starts out slow and took a while to warm up to it. I liked the story, and probably will read aloud to my kids when they are a little bit older.

As an avid Harry Potter fan, I'm glad there is another book (among many others) that using the magic environment but having its own identity.

This book is about a boy named Conn, a pickpocket that just doing his everyday activity, picking pocket when he choose a wrong victim. He met Nevery, a cast out wizard that just got back to Wellmet. A situation happened that make Nevery take Conn along with him back to his house. Later, Conn discovered that he is indeed a wizard. As the story progress, he helped Nevery to do the task that brought Nevery back to a place where he was once been cast out.

The difference between this book & HP is that wizard & non-magic folk live together, relying on the magic to make the town alive. There is a school which they called 'academico' where wizard & normal kids learn about magic & stuff. While HP is between 1992-2000+, this story situated way back in the years where electricity is not yet been discovered. These differences are the 'it' that make me interested to know more about this, another world of magic.
Overall, its a good & quick read because the lines are written very short that sometimes make me yawn (excuse me). I'll look forward to read the 2nd book.

I enjoyed the plucky little hero in this book.

An utterly charming and engaging children's fantasy novel about a young pickpocket named Conn who becomes a wizard. Conn's a fun character, a good kid with a delightful sense of humor, which shines through in his narration of the story. Highly recommended for young fans of Harry Potter or anyone who enjoys a light fantasy.

Very strong fantasy title for late elementary/middle grade readers. I booktalk this book all the time and I always have interested kids check it out.

This was a slow started for me, but picked up pace as the story progressed. For kids that like books about wizards, I am sure The Magic Thief own't disappoint. I did really like the knitting bodyguard.

Very nice story of an orphan who tries to pick the pocket of a magician and winds up as his apprentice. Through a series of adventures, Conn befriends the daughter of a duchess and helps his master find out why the city is losing magic. Author Sarah Prineas has created an interesting magic system that provides one of the key plot devices in the book. A good story that is fun for all ages.

This book was such a fun read. The found family dynamic is something I always adore. I loved the ingrained morals of Conn, he was a character that kids could really look up to: someone who is true to himself and to those around him. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
