Wolves of the Calla

SUMMARY: Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, the DARK TOWER series is unlike anything you have ever read. Here is the fifth installment, "one of the strongest entries yet in what will surely be a master storyteller's magnum opus" (Locus).Roland Deschain and his ka-tet are bearing southeast through the forests of Mid-World on their quest for the Dark Tower. Their path takes them to the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis. But beyond the tranquil farm town, the ground rises to the hulking darkness of Thunderclap, the source of a terrible affliction that is stealing the town's soul. The wolves of Thunderclap and their unspeakable depredation are coming. To resist them is to risk all, but these are odds the gunslingers are used to. Their guns, however, will not be enough....

This is easily my favorite of the series so far! I had many moments of "Oh my gosh, I totally get what's happening now!" followed by "Oh wow, I was so wrong!" The tension surrounding the actual nature of the wolves went on just a touch too long for me, but there were some terrific twists. Including Father Callaghan from Salem's Lot was a stroke of genius.

Roland and his Ka-tet are following the path of the beam when they come to Calla Bryn Sturgis and are set with the task of saving one out of every pair of twins born there. (twins are the norm) About every 20 years the Wolves come into town and take one of the twins for a time. The twin, when returned, is roont. This twin won't remember anything, will be an idiot, will grow to a huge size, and die young. Also in the town, they meet Father Callahan, who will join their ka-tet for a while. Whose path has crossed theirs in the past.

Good story. Was a really long book, but it didn't feel that way.

Having now read the first five books in the Dark Tower series, Wolves of the Calla is definitely my favorite. It does lag in spots, but the suspense and world building was the best in this book compared to the others. All of the connections from the world of this story to the other worlds (Roland's Gilead, the NYC of Jake, Susannah, Eddie, and Donald Callahan) were surprising and yet expected. Onward to the next book!

The Libby app paused for a long time while I was listening to this book, so I thought it had ended, and started the next... which spoiled the ending a bit, argh. But I went back and finished this, and it was very satisfying and gripping, as the series has been all along.

I had to reread Wizard And Glass to refresh my memory on this series. Found this book at a used book store while on vacation and am deep into it already.

Same good stuff and yet different, as per usual for this series.

I've read this entire series several times and will read them again! One of my favorites

Loved this one a lot possibly my favorite tied with Wizard and Glass so far. Jake and Father Callahan absolutely stole the show for me on this one. It was easy to get invested in the plight of the folken of Calla Bryn Sturgis and what seemed like a side quest was a fun adventure.
