Great concept, execution was a bit lacking but fun quick read overall.

This book was amazing. Let's talk about the graphics. It was beautifully done and the expressions really gave us a look at the characters personalities before they even spoke. This was over 300 pages yet it went by like a dream and I finished it in an hour. The story itself was really intriguing and impactful. If you're a history buff or love war based fictions this is definitely for you but even I loved it and I'm not the biggest fan of war based books. The message could be implied in our current society and it really makes you think about being part of the machine. I loved it but the ending was too open for my tastes. I like everything wrapped up in a bow so I know where everyone ended up.

Stunned the most by this line:

"Is it giving, if it isn't you bearing the burden? If the only one standing in the ashes is you?"

I had some issues with continuity errors with
Aiza's arm tattoo and bandaging
and
some of the darker characters being portrayed as the most patriotic/racist ones but maybe the author didn't wanna be too on the nose in fiction; reality speaks for itself as it is.
Am I overthinking all that stuff? Meh anyway, still a decent read

The author dedicated this book to Edward Said, and you can definitely see a lot of his influence here. It was cool seeing the story play with a lot of those themes.

The authors’ notes at the end are something I want every YA reader to see. In addition to the fantastic story and world building, I’m so glad this Arab hero story exists to bring representation and perspective to the fantasy audience.
