Fun to read - love the characters and their arcs. Lots of war/military jargon that was hard to understand and made it tough to stay engaged.
I really liked it!! Very engaging story with a very independent female character without making her whole thing that she is independent. We need more stories about women with swords, tbh.
I loved the racial dynamic to the story. Very timely. You see a lot these days people blindly following authority, or even just standing for their society without questioning the true values it represents. A lot of the time, minorities are sidelined and, unless you are a part of them, it takes a lot to notice the inconsistencies and the double standards imposed by these overarching structures of power. There are tons of social experiments showing people their privilege and how, when you are the people a society is built for, it is hard to notice the inequalities. This graphic novel, I find, showcases this dilemma well. The ignorance of people in the majority paired with classic rewriting history on the part of the ruling power is ver consistent with what we see in our every day lives, and I like how this story showed that. There was nuance, but for those of us who find it harder to pick up on themes these days, the overall theme was apparent enough to find it.
A little sad that there wasn’t a conclusive ending, but none would have been satisfying. If they lost, it would be heartbreaking, but if they won, it would feel phoney. It leaves it open and we, as the reader, are encouraged to keep fighting. The fight for equity amongst all peoples will not be a wuick and easy fix, as this shows, but it is something to stand for, and I approve wholeheartedly.
Also, lowkey thought Basem and Husni would end up together. The TENSION. THE BRIDAL CARRY AND HAND HOLDING AT THE END. but alas. There is growth to be had before then. But Husni is babygirl and I love him. Him and his silk pants that he brought to a military base. Extra king.
This comic is so fun and THE COLORS!!!! Good times were had by all.

Spoiler
I like how Aiza doesn’t harden because of what happens to her. She doesn’t end up killing General Hende and offers to help her escape. She stays good to the people who hurt her, in spite of them, showing them time and time again that their prejudices are wrong. Ultimately, it is racism and an unwilling to change and evolve as a person that killed the General, not Aiza. I loved that ending.A little sad that there wasn’t a conclusive ending, but none would have been satisfying. If they lost, it would be heartbreaking, but if they won, it would feel phoney. J'ai adoré la relation entre Aiza et Doruk. Probablement un des aspects qui m'a le plus plu, ça et le questionnement autour de la guerre et des enjeux de pouvoir.
