you can tell the author was a fantasy kid growing up through the world building and rich history of this fictional conflict

it's rooted in actual historical conflict so that it feels realistic

This has been sitting on my nightstand since March 16, 2024. Finally read it so I can return it to the library before we move.

Loved most of the art. Some of the panel sequencing felt out of place. Wish that there was a little more depth to some of it rather than rushing through, which I imagine is a challenging balance in graphic novels.

A beautiful look at how history and all its versions are taught, unlearned and held.

This is the kind of book you keep safe to hand on to your kid. By abstracting the Israel/Palestine conflict through a fantasy world, Shammas and Alfageeh manage to tell the stories of both oppressed and oppressor through their hero Aiza, and capture the complex phases of denial, disillusionment and deradicalisation through the wider ensemble. Full of sorrow, fury and hope, Squire is a very moving read
