Between the optimistic young protagonists, the expressive art style, and the story of a fractured nation, “Squire” totally feels like it could be set in “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” It has a similar charm.

Story wise, it’s too fast-paced, leading the plot & character development to feel pretty rushed throughout. I think the story would’ve done well broken into multiple books, especially with the heavier themes.

Still, I think this book offers a great way to educate young readers about big subjects like war, colonialism, discrimination, and co-existence.

A higher rating for the art style, but the plot moved too fast with little to no time for character/relationship development. Would've suited being a series imo, especially as the ending feels like the end of a prologue

Squire is so good!

I loved the characterization! Especially in the chapter where we got to see the main characters writing back home to their families.

There is no romance.

Overall, this is a pretty decent intro to the concepts of apartheid, discrimination, and immigration, especially for young readers. I think the relationship between Aiza and Husni especially showed off the affects these concepts can have on young people. The art is beautiful and the story & characters have potential. I think the story needed more time though. The pacing was pretty fast and the characters & relationships could have used more fleshing out.
